Christopher Bastin was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. He began working life in a record store but soon realised that clothes were more his thing. So, with a bit of luck, he managed to get a job in a denim shop and thus kickstarting his career in clothing. From there he moved on to production and also buying for a number of different brands including H&M and Acne. He worked very close to the designers at such places and picked up many thoughts and ideas from doing so. When one day he saw that Gant were looking for a shirt designer, he decided to jump right in and give it a go. Without any formal design training, and barely able to draw a straight line, Bastin has become one of the best (at least at their price point) and most well known menswear designers in America. Very inspiring...
Gant have produced classic apparel since its introduction in the 1940s, helping shape the style of Preppy American Sportswear; and is even responsible for the invention of many design features that are still widely used on shirts today, such as the locker loop, the box pleat and the back collar button.
“If it ain’t broken don’t fix it. We’ve been around since 1949, there’s a lot of stuff that ain’t broken."
Yesterday, the Fall/Winter collection was introduced, using a very original form of presentation. Guests were invited to a restaurant and the models just "sat around, chatting, hanging out and just generally doing their best not to look like they were modelling". What a brilliant idea! Afterwards they all sat down for roasted lamb and grilled sea bass. (You can see the pictures from the evening here).
Here is the collection in full, and I have to say, it's brilliant. It's rare that I come across a show where I'd wear pretty much every piece, but this is one of those (even that silk robe and the madras sportcoat)...
